The dual floating head is so much more effective than the fixed type of dual head used on the 5614, and it ensures that the cutters are always in maximum contact with the face. Using a pre-electric shaving lotion helps to raise the whiskers, lubricates the skin, and importantly also lubricates the cutters. From experience with previous shavers the speed of the cutter is one of the main factors for getting a good shave, and in this respect the 720s-4 excels - the Series 7 is probably the fastest of them all, by far. The cutter head can be locked to prevent rotation and make shaving under the nose easier, but I find that the lock offers little benefit. Three operating modes are provided - sensitive, normal and intensive. They appear to slightly change the cutter speed, but I always use the intensive mode without any effect upon my skin. For me the adjustment seems to be a feature with little benefit. The shaver is about the same size as most other Braun shavers, has a soft plastic body for grip and feels comfortable and well-weighted in the hand. The long-hair trimmer is easy to use; a push of the thumb extends the trimmer from its flush position in the body. The durability of the trimmer mechanism has been questioned by some users, but the simple mechanism appears to be quite robust and should prove durable over time. Overall the ergonomics of the shaver are first class and far better than all other shavers that I have ever used. The battery is a Li-ion type, and is both powerful and of high capacity. It provides me with about 21 shaves, and numerous cleanings, before the low battery indicator comes on. Also, very importantly, the reduction in shaver speed between fully charged and discharged is minimal, and has only a small effect upon the quality and speed of the shave. Charging is very fast (around an hour) and 5 minutes charges the battery enough for at least one shave. A green LED indicator blinks during charging, and during use. A red LED indicates when the charge is down to the last 2 shaves, although I find more than 2 can easily be achieved. What can I say about the noise it makes. I use a squirt of liquid soap onto the cutters and wash the shaver, with cutting head attached and the shaver running, under a stream of hot water. Remove the cutter, rinse, blow off excess water and leave to dry before reattaching to shaver. Cleaning takes about a couple of minutes. The best results are obtained by cleaning after every use, but quite good results are achieved by cleaning after every other shave. It is not advisable to only clean after more than 3 shaves. The shaver comes complete with a Braun 5210 charger and a black cloth-covered semi-rigid zipped travel case. Although the black cloth cover looks good when new it could become very soiled over time, especially if it gets wet or contaminated. The case only holds the shaver; there is no room for the shaver and charger. There is no hard plastic protector provided, which leaves the cutter heads exposed to accidental damage between shaves, unless the zipped case is used. Best shaving results are achieved by using a pre-electric shaving lotion, stretching the skin, and moving the shaver against the direction of the stubble. The resulting shave, with a clean cutter and a fully charged battery, is probably as close as it is possible to get to a conventional wet shave - the best shaves I have ever had with an electric shaver. 40 shaver to this, the Remmington was good enough for the money, the Braun is a pricier shaver with a foil head, this works really well for me, shaving is quick and much closer, it feels as good as a wet shave and there is no irritation. I am very pleased with this, it is a powerful shaver, it is German made and to a very high standard. This is the real MacCoy of shavers. It also comes with a little cleaning brush that fits easily in the case with the razor, which is useful for keeping it's performance up. Within seconds of it touching my face I was impressed and as the days went by I was sold on the idea of having one, despite my own shaver being only about a month old. At first the price was daunting and I thought about it for a while, then searched for a good price and got one from a very good dealer on Amazon. The razor is brand new and sealed - only the box is a little tatty - so I was delighted with the price and swift delivery by Electro-Directnet. The razor itself looks a little garish by German standards, but it clearly states it is made in Germany so I just need to get used to modern German styling. The shave it gives is indeed pretty close, with less need to go over various parts of the face several times. I've been using the 'insensitive' setting in the hope of a quicker, better shave - no blood or rash so far. After doing some research I concluded that the 720 without the clean and renew should be just as good as the 790. Bearing in mind I had the clean and renew with my previous Series 3 I was really not bothered about having it again. Therefore, I ordered the 720 and got it at a cracking price on Amazon so the risk to me was low. I figured if it was no better than the Series 3 then I would either sell it or just keep it for holidays. Lets cut to the chase. The shave itself is not quite as close as wet shave. In terms of the actual appearance of your face there is really no difference between the shave it produces and a wet shave, however, when you run your hand across your face you can feel very short stubble, unlike a wet shave for me where you can't really feel anything. It took me about 5 weeks to get used to using it effectively. It terms of time it doesn't save me any compared to a wet shave, but its no hassle, it cannot nick your skin, there are no consumables to worry about and it also looks and feels good too. It charges in 60 minutes and using it every day I get 2 weeks out of it, which I think is great. It feels well made and cleaning could not be simpler. Shave and then simply click the cassette off and run it under the tap. I can say from experience that this actually cleans it more effectively than the clean and renew, so save yourself the money. This shaver only cost twice the price of a replacement set of cutters for my old shaver when it was heavily discounted. The Braun 720 offers a very close shave with adjustable settings as well as a swivel head that can be locked into place if preferred. Under normal use expect to get about 12-14 shaves from a fully charged battery. For those not used to foil shavers, it does take a little time to adjust to pressure and strokes needed to achieve a close shave but there is no doubt that the razor gives a much closer shave than the rotary one I previously used. The shaver comes with a soft travel case which offers minor protection only. My only main criticism of this product is that it does not come with a stand and there is also no foil guard for when not in use. This makes it quite difficult to store and there is the slight chance that the shaver could get damaged if care is not taken. And having previously owned a Braun shaver, i knew this would be a good quality product. Having seen this shaver for more than double the price in the high street, i decided to take the plunge and purchase from Amazon, which delivered rather quickly. First impressions were this was a product well made, great design, and much improved over my previous shaver. After fully charging, i tried it on my 5 day long stubble, and the results were great. My beard grows in really weird directions, and it's very thick. Impressively, i had no trouble at all getting rid of it, and no cuts, bleeding, or irritation. I do have some ingrowing hairs around the chin, and they were the only ones left after i finished shaving (yes, this shaver does not perform miracles !), so for that reason alone i did use my razor to get rid of them. However, with continued use of this shaver i find my skin is suffering less, and the irritation around the neck is now a thing of the past (and believe me, it was BAD). Also, being a frequent traveller, i find it holds the charge very well (charged it once and lasted me for 2 weeks whilst in Madrid), and the travel pouch supplied is quite handy too. But cleaning the Shaver manually is where things got a little difficult: At first cleaning the Series 7 appears to be incredibly simple. Use some non-abrasive hand soap and run it under water with the power on. Remove the shaving head and repeat. But achieving a perfect clean seems just out of reach. There were still small little hair “dots” inside the shaving head even after cleaning for a good 2 minutes. While the clean is satisfactory, there are still hairs inside the shaving head. The Braun cleaning station did a much better job at removing these than my increasingly frustrated attempts could. If you can successfully clean this shaver under running water then I applaud you. It was something I could not manage. And don’t get me started on doing a “dry clean” with the included cleaning brush. Messy and not very effective. The whole cleaning process is designed to steer you towards the cleaning station. Now fortunately the cleaning station does an incredibly thorough job at removing any traces of hair. In fact, the best out of all the big brands. If you treat this as a shaver that you must use with the cleaning station then you won’t be disappointed. To this end I would recommend you steer clear of the 720s-4 model, since it does not come with an included cleaning station. There is a reason why this product is so popular after all. But it is really showing it’s age. And this is very obvious when you compare the Series 7 to the step up and “step down” in Braun’s Series range of electric shavers: Nearly everything the Braun series 7 does, other shavers in Braun’s line up can do as good or better. Not just the series 9 above it, but the Series 5 below it. Which begs the question, why would you choose this shaver over either one of them. And after thoroughly reviewing the Series 7, I cannot come up with a compelling reason as to why you should. It’s not that the Series 7 is a bad shaver, that’s not it at all and it is a fine example of Braun being able to offer a great shave. But staying true to a design that is now over 5 years old is not doing the shaver any favors, especially at the price being demanded. It’s funny. If I reviewed this shaver 5 years ago when it first came out then it is likely I would have only had positive things to say since there was nothing else on the market quite like it. But as time passed and Braun’s competitors (and Braun’s own range) have caught up and the shaver has gone from great to merely good. For many of you, good will be good enough. Especially if a reliable and satisfactory shave is all you want. But for those that want better, you do not have to look too far to find it. Neck is so-so, but I think that every electric razor would be just as marginal. I have been thinking about replacing the head but looking around has producted doubts. I have seen many recent reviews that complain that the quality of the new replacments has tumbled dramatically. I don’t know what has happened and when.
